I’m so excited to have some special mommy-daughter time with my biggest little! Piper and I were invited to the Sweet Dani B Cookie Decorating Class at West Field Valley Fair in Santa Clara next Friday!  We’re going to learn how to make her signature day of the dead cookies. To make it even more special it will be on Piper’s 6th birthday (side note, how in the world is she going to be 6?!). Decorating cookies with my cutie, on her birthday, with minimal cleanup? Can’t get much better than that!

I won’t lie, I’m not the best at cookie decorating. I’ve definitely tried my fair share of times to make super cute cookies and failed miserably. It will be great to get some tips! Have you ever been to a cooking class of any kind? I haven’t, and I’m really looking forward to it! I’ve heard great things about Macy’s Culinary Council.

 

To get ourselves ready for the class I took a hack at making Sweet Dani B’s Famous Royal Icing and decorating some …ahem… store-bought sugar pumpkin cookies. Make sure to head over to my Instagram to see the process in my highlights!

It was pretty simple, needing only 5 ingredients: 1/2 cup meringue powder (found in the baking aisle at any supermarket), 1 cup water, 2 pounds confectioner sugar, 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice and some food coloring.

Next time I think I’ll add less water and only do half the recipe because it turned out a little runny and there is a ton of it! This attempt created tye-dye and watercolor cookies. The girls had a blast!

Maybe the key to cookie decorating is in the frosting?
