Over Spring Break we decided it was time for a much-needed vacation. Finally! A break from all the day to day hustle. The girls have been begging to go to the snow and Pat and I were so excited to make their dreams a reality before it all melts away for the season! South Lake Tahoe is one of our favorite places to take the kids, not just when it’s snowing but during any season! There’s a ton of fun things to do, great food and breathtaking views that the whole family can enjoy. Our girls are currently 5 and almost 3 years old and we had the best time! Between relaxing at in the hot tub at the Ridge Tahoe and Ice Skating at South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena it was a perfect vacation!
Interested in visiting South Lake Tahoe with your family? I’ve put together a list of some of our favorite things to do, places to eat and where to stay!
Things to do:
Ice Skating: We encountered a little rain on our trip. Ice Skating was the perfect indoor activity to get active and break away from the weather. There are two ice rinks in South Lake Tahoe, one indoor The South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena, (where we ended up) and outdoors at The Heavenly Village, the outdoor rink operates from November 1st-Easter weekend.
Side note: I’m obsessed and can’t wait to take the girls again! This was our first time taking the kids and Pat and I have been wanting to since Piper was born! I will warn you though, ice skating with little ones isn’t exactly easy! Between the two of us, we were always holding someone up! I even skated holding Kenzie on my hip for an hour, probably not recommended if you are wobbly on your feet, I have a figure skating background. 🙂
Sledding at Hansen’s Resort: The perfect little sledding hill for kids conveniently located right on the main street in South Lake Tahoe. 1360 Ski Run Blvd, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150 make sure to call for times and to make sure it’s open 530-544-3361
Heavenly Mountain Resort: Our family loves to snowboard! Heavenly has lessons for kids 4 and up and is a great place to ski or snowboard! The mountain has something for every experience level and tubing too!
Arcades for the Kids/Gambling for Adults: If you like to gamble, South Lake is on the state line and has casinos. I’m not a gambler but the kids had fun in the kid zone inside of Harvey’s when it was rainy.
Lake Tahoe: In the summer Lake Tahoe is a great place to play in the sand and wade in the water. In the winter it is a fun place to walk around and enjoy the views. Such a beautiful spot!
Where to eat (with gluten-free options):
Base Camp Pizza: Base Camp Pizza is the perfect family friendly lunch or dinner spot! The gluten free pizza was delicious and live music helped create a fun atmosphere. We loved sitting in the heated outdoor covered patio. Located in Heavenly Village at 1001 Heavenly Village Way #25a, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150
The Bistro: (on property at The Ridge Tahoe) If you stay at The Ridge this cafe is the perfect place to stop and grab a quick bite to eat. The omelets were delicious and they have gluten free bakery items so you can’t go wrong! Open 7 days a week includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Red Hut Café on Kingsbury: We also heard Red Hut Café was a great family-friendly restaurant that serves breakfast all day in a casual, old-school diner setting. We didn’t make it here this time but look forward to giving it a try on our next trip! Located at 229 Kingsbury Grade Rd, Stateline, NV 89449
For Dessert: Head to The Baked Bear! OMG, the best fresh ice cream sandwiches I’ve ever had and they are made to order! And YES they have a gluten-free option! You should have seen me jump up and down when I found out they had GF cookies. I have the worst sweet tooth and these were sooooo good! You pick the cookie, ice cream flavor, and toppings and they assemble and heat press them. If you have a sweet tooth you won’t want to miss this place!
Where to stay:
The Ridge Tahoe: The Ridge was the perfect place for our family of 4! It’s out of the way of all the hustle and bustle but provides free transportation to and from town. They have a ton of activities for kids and easy access to Heavenly Ski Resort. Check out my review of The Ridge HERE.
South Lake Tahoe is the perfect getaway spot! We loved every second of our trip even in the rain I was hoping would miss us! Have any questions about South Lake Tahoe? Leave a comment and I’ll get back to you!
Where is your favorite vacation spot? We’re always looking for good family friendly travel ideas for our next vacation!
