Our Living Room Update: A Review of Modsy

We tried Modsy’s Online Interior Design service to help us update our living room. Here’s how the process went and an honest review of Modsy.

We’ve lived in our house for four years now, which sounds like forever when I tell you we haven’t done much of anything to the place since we bought it. We moved the furniture we already had and made things work for the space, claiming we’d get some new items soon. Well, here we are 4+ years later. We did paint the walls but unfortunately made the mistake of having them painted while out of town. Please don’t repeat my mistake; the color didn’t look as imagined. I may be a graphic designer by day, but I am no interior designer. Here’s where Modsy comes in.

Modsy is an interior design service that is entirely online. It’s perfect for people like me who want to update their space but have difficulty pulling the trigger on ideas. The best part is they create a 360 view of your space with furniture, art, decor options, and even paint colors.

How Modsy Works

Modsy makes it hard to come up with an excuse not to use their services. It is super user-friendly, even if you aren’t very tech-savvy, and at a great price. They have design packages starting at $159/room. I also have a discount code for you, but we’ll get to that a little later.

Step 1: Start your project

Go to Modsy’s website or download the app and start your project. You’ll select the type of room you’d like help designing, then answer some questions selecting which styles you like best out of a group of images.

Step 2: Scan your room on the Modsy App

Use the Modsy app on your phone to scan your room. You don’t have to remove furniture or clutter; just follow the directions in the app. This part is very easy. You can use the app or upload photos and measurements.

Once this information is in the system, a designer will send you layout options to choose from; this takes about 24 hours. Then you’ll schedule a meeting face to face from the comfort of your computer/phone screen with the designer.

Step 3: Meet your designer online

Your designer will join you for a meeting online to discuss your style, ideas, and any furniture you’d like to keep in the room. You have the option to rearrange what you already own, purchase everything new, or a combination of the two.

The designer I worked with was great; she was so friendly despite a few hiccups with her camera not working. It was nice to have a conversation with the actual person working on your design project instead of simply communicating through messaging or having some AI system do it. The whole thing is very personalized.

Step 4: View your design options

Seeing the designs created for you is the best part. You don’t have to play the guessing game. Your designer at Modsy creates a 360 view of your space with furniture, art, and decor options. You get to see YOUR room with new paint colors, furniture, the whole nine yards.

In about 48 hours, my design options were available to look at and play with. You have the option within the program to swap items out if they aren’t exactly what you are looking for. You can request unlimited revisions if you aren’t in love with placement or, for example, you want to see what a bookcase would look like in the corner in place of that plant.

Step 5: Purchasing Furniture, Decor, and Art

There is a shopping platform within Modsy where you can purchase everything your designer included in your space. It isn’t required but makes things very convenient!

Before and Afters

Here’s our space before and the digital mock-ups my designer created. The current color isn’t good (in my opinion); the inlets on either side of the fireplace are a mess. Our couch is old, and the curtains don’t match since we never updated them after painting. The coffee table is tiny and also old, I could keep going, but you get the picture. It needs help!

I love the design ideas my designer at Modsy came up with! They are clean, livable, and the prices are within the budget I set for myself.
