A little painting project

Things as simple as the noise a plastic water bottle makes when squeezing it fascinates Piper for hours. But last night I wanted to do something special for her. I found some old butcher paper in the garage and taped it to the fence. Pulled out the Crayola washable finger paint, a few caps from the laundry detergent I had saved up for something just like this, and some of my old paint brushes. Her eyes lit up when she saw the brushes, and then she jumped up and down when I told her she could paint on the fence in our backyard. When Pat got home from work Piper ran to him handing him a paintbrush insisting, “Daddy, come paint!” The three of us painted together for over an hour.

Art has always been an important part of my life. My parents were both artists and brought my sister, brother and I up with art all around us. Taking us to museums, creating fun projects for us, and putting us in art classes at a young age. I loved it. I was fascinated by the fact that people could create such amazing works of art and even more amazed when my mom said I could make things like the paintings I’d stare at in The Art Institute of Chicago if I wanted to. All you need is an imagination and a pencil.

I’m going to make sure Piper and any future children I might have get the same opportunity by introducing art to them early and helping them to appreciate and learn about it. Right now drawing, painting, and gluing things like pom-poms to popsicle-sticks are some of Pipers favorite things to do!
