It’s a… Gender Reveal! + How to Make Colored Powder

We are so excited to share the news that our family is expecting a baby in May!!!! Pat and I couldn’t be happier and more excited! Piper is looking forward to being a big sister although we are not sure if she realizes that this means she will be sharing her mommy and daddy.

At our last appointment, we found out the gender of our sweet growing baby, and weren’t surprised one bit! haha  To share the news with our families we filled a giant balloon with the appropriate colored powder, hung it from a tree then popped it over our heads during a photoshoot! Ok, the hanging it in a tree part was a bit harder than expected but it was super fun!

How to Make Colored Gender Reveal Powder

*Colored powder also known as holi powder or throwing powder.

Supplies To Make Colored Gender Reveal Powder

  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup water
  • blue or pink food coloring
  • mixing bowl
  • plastic wrap
  • baking sheet
  • funnel
  • an extra-large ballon

Step 1.

Mix water with a few drops of food color, then slowly pour into cornstarch and stir until well blended. Add more color if needed to reach the desired color. It will dry a little lighter than it appears.

Step 2.

Line a baking sheet with plastic wrap and press the mixture onto the coated sheet evenly. Let dry for 24-48 hours. It will start cracking as it dries.

Step 3.

Once the mixture is completely dry break it into chunks. For best results use a food processor or blender to blend it into a powder. I didn’t have a blender at the time so I put the powder into ziplock baggies and used a rolling pin to break it up. Still worked, but took much longer than a blender would have.

Step 4.

Using a funnel pour the powder into a balloon. Next, blow up the balloon with an air pump. If you try to do it yourself you’ll get powder in your lungs, not a good idea.

Tie the balloon overhead and POP it with something sharp like a needle.
